Which CPAP Mask Should I Use?

If you have been diagnosed as having sleep apnea, your doctor will likely prescribe to you the CPAP therapy. CPAP refers to continuous positive airway pressure which is a therapy that uses a CPAP machine to force pressurized air down your throat. This is done to keep the soft tissues at the back of your throat from collapsing to keep your airway open.

In addition to a machine, you also require a mask such as the Resmed CPAP mask to breathe in the pressurized air. The mask that you use should have a good seal so that the pressurized air will not leak.

What To Consider When Choosing A Mask

There are very many shapes and sizes of CPAP masks and there are a few things you can keep in mind in order to focus your search. You first need to consider whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth in your sleep. If you normally breathe through your nose, the nasal mask or the nasal pillow can work for you. You will however require a full face mask if you normally breathe through your mouth.

Your sleeping style is also important since a full face mask will require you to sleep on your back. The nasal pillow and nasal mask are suitable if you are a side sleeper, if you sleep on your stomach or if you move a lot in your sleep. If you need a high pressure for your therapy, you may need to use a full face mask while the nasal pillow and nasal mask work better with low pressure.

What Is A Nasal Pillow?

A nasal pillow is also referred to as a nasal direct mask and consists of two pillows or cushions which are placed at the edge of the nostrils. The nasal direct Resmed CPAP mask is very light and uses a fluid technology so that the pillows take up the shape of your nostrils as you move. The cushions come in various sizes including extra small, small, medium and large.

The nasal pillow can be used if you have facial hair since it will not interfere with the seal of the mask. It is also a good choice if you are claustrophobic as you will not feel enclosed due to the minimal contact it has with your face. Your view is also not hindered and you can read a book or watch television in bed.

When Is A Nasal Mask Suitable?

A nasal mask is worn over your nose and does not directly supply the air to your nostrils so you can comfortably breathe in the pressurized air. The nasal Resmed CPAP mask has a silicone cushion known as the InfinitySeal which is flexible and takes up the shape of your face. The cushion provides a good seal so that air leakage is avoided.

Benefits Of A Full Face Mask

The full face mask allows you to breathe through your nose and mouth without interfering with the effectiveness of the therapy. If you prefer to use a nasal mask or a nasal pillow, you can always have a full face mask as a back up for the days which you will experience nasal congestion.
